Living in the South, we have all experienced how annoying flies can be. Did you know that flies are much more than a nuisance, they are also a health concern?
Flies have two wings which cause them to land often. When flies land on waste to feed, they pick up bacteria. They typically vomit on the food they land on, and then ingest the liquid from it. Every time a fly lands, he is transferring bacteria which can cause food poisoning, upset stomach, meningitis and more!
There are over 16,000 species of flies in North America alone. Properly identifying the type of fly will aid us in getting rid of the problem.
Flies feed off of decay, so it is important to identify the source and remove it. Practicing good housekeeping, such as keeping counters and sinks cleaned and free of food, and ensuring that garbage cans are kept clean and securely closed, along with limiting access into the house through doors and windows will help prevent an infestation from occurring.
